Dedicated Server Options: Managed or Unmanaged
Web server hosting in simple terms is the process of a web server designed to operate as a server that keeps your web site files. The server serves up the web site contents to all users accessing your web domain name, if set up as a web server. Different server hosting plans exist, ranging from shared hosting servers to semi-dedicated and dedicated servers. Virtual Dedicated Servers come in two flavors: managed servers and unmanaged server hosting.
Managed Virtual Dedicated Servers come assisted by the service providing the server. As with all servers, you are given admin access, however a managed server has the benefit of the OS (Windows or Linux) patches being installed onto your server. This makes sure all patches are updated in a timely manner. The assisted service plans will also handle initial server setup, security scans for viruses, and emergency services. Unmanaged Dedicated Servers
Unlike the dedicated servers where it is all managed for you, these are completely controlled by you. If you have a problem with your server, you will need to troubleshoot. Many dedicated server service providers do still offer support with unmanaged dedicated servers. Technical Assistance is required for computer failures and other network issues within the data centre. After all, you are able to access the server, but you do not have physical access to the server, so you cannot fix hardware issues.
The purchaser’s knowledge of server configuration will help pick if a managed or unmanaged virtual dedicated server solution is the best choice. Many dedicated server plans exist with various price points, but knowing if its managed dedicated server hosting or an unmanaged dedicated server will help you determine if the price warrants the service being provided to you. As with all purchases made, the higher the price directly relates to the value of the server purchased, but not always.
