Portrait of Jack Nicas

Jack Nicas

I write about Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. My beat can include almost any topic in that region, including politics, economics, culture, the environment and crime. One of the best parts of my job is that I travel frequently to report stories and meet subjects in person. I also regularly work with freelance reporters across the region to cover so much territory. I am drawn to investigative and explanatory journalism, but I also seek out the sort of unusual and surprising stories that you hopefully want to tell your friends at the bar.

I moved to Brazil for The Times in late 2021. I’ve long had an interest in Latin America, and I speak Portuguese and some Spanish. Before Brazil, I was a reporter for The Times in San Francisco, where I spent four years covering the power and influence of the world’s largest technology companies.

I’ve been working as a reporter since I was 19, with early stints at the Boston Globe and the St. Petersburg Times in Florida. I later spent seven years at The Wall Street Journal, where I covered technology, aviation and the American Midwest. I have been part of reporting teams that have won the George Polk Award, Gerald Loeb Awards and an Emmy. I graduated from Boston University and grew up in Worcester, Mass.

Like all Times journalists, I am committed to upholding the standards of integrity outlined in our Ethical Journalism Handbook. A key principle in my work is reporting with empathy and an open mind. I treat all subjects with the same honesty and respect, regardless of their backgrounds or worldviews. And I always strive to make sure my reporting, and not any preconceptions, dictates the story. The result, I hope, is more impartial, more accurate and just better journalism.
