Portrait of Jessica Cheung

Jessica Cheung

At “The Daily,” I work with newsroom reporters to remake their writing into audio stories. I also do my own reporting, focusing on politics and education. I have particular interest in the ways racial and class identities are affected and shaped by the K-12 and higher education system.

I joined The Times in 2018 after working at NPR, where I produced and reported for “All Things Considered.” In 2019, I produced an episode of “The Daily” on predatory loans that buried New York City taxi owners in crippling debt, which was part of a package that won the Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting. I also helped lead production for “The Daily” on coverage of China’s crackdown on the Uyghur ethnic group that won the Edward R. Murrow Award in 2020.

I grew up in San Francisco and graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont with a B.A. in English. I now live in Brooklyn.

I abide by the same ethics policy as all Times journalists. I aim to be nuanced in my coverage, and fair and empathetic to the people I meet. I consider it a privilege when people share their stories with me, and I ensure that anyone who is interviewed feels clear on the reporting process. I don’t accept gifts from sources, and I don’t actively participate in political causes.
