I lead the Audio team’s in-house music composition efforts for the newsroom at The New York Times.
What I Cover
I manage a small team that creates nearly all of the music you hear on “The Daily” and many of our other shows.
My Background
I’ve been playing music for most of my life. Before joining The Times, I worked as a staff engineer for American Public Media, supporting the technical needs of long-running public radio programs, including “Marketplace” and “The Splendid Table.” I’m also the co-creator and sound designer of the fiction podcast “Archive 81,” which was adapted into a Netflix original series.
I have a degree in English and textual studies from Syracuse University, which still comes in handy when I’m helping colleagues describe what kind of music they need for their project.
Journalistic Ethics
As a Times journalist, I share the values and adhere to the standards of integrity outlined in our Ethical Journalism Handbook. And as an artist, I’m distinctly aware of the fact that music can influence a listener’s emotions. My team and I take the utmost care in making sure our work does not editorialize or create bias in our podcasts. Every note, chord and instrument choice is made with The Times’s independent journalistic voice in mind.
