Personal note from Tyler Family

It is with a heavy heart that we share the tragic news of the loss of our beloved son Luke, a freshman at WSU. We are so grateful for the outpouring of love, support and kindness shown to our family throughout this time, it means so much to us.

We have created The Luke Tyler Memorial Sailing Fund | A scholarship that honors kindness, sense of adventure and passion for learning at Sail Sand Point* to enable other children to learn to sail and love the water the way Luke did. (*Sail Sand Point (http://www.sailsandpoint.org/…) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Their federal tax ID is 91-1928908.) Please consider a donation in lieu of flowers.

Updates

Update from March 9, 2023

Thank you again for your continued love and support for our family.

Many of you have asked how you can help. Today, there is something you can do. The House Bill 1002 — the Sam Martinez Stop Hazing Law — is scheduled for its next hearing in front of the Senate Law & Justice Committee on Monday, March 13, 10:30 am.

We need serious criminal penalties for hazing, in addition to education, training and transparency, to end hazing. HB 1002 makes hazing a felony when someone is injured or dies.

HB 1002 passed the House unanimously 96 to 0 last week. Now, we are starting over in the Senate and introducing the bill to a new group of lawmakers.

It takes just 2 minutes to register online as “pro” for the bill. Anyone can support the bill (even if you're outside of Washington). Lawmakers notice when we have large numbers of people signing in as supporters. Our hope is to get 500 people to sign in by Monday. Please help us by registering your support!

1. Go to this link: https://app.leg.wa.gov/csi/Se…
2. Select HB 1002, Hazing Penalty.
3. Below that, select “I would like my position noted for the legislative record” and follow the instructions.

Thank you so much for helping us honor both Sam Martinez's and Luke Tyler's memory by working to stop hazing. And thank you to Jolayne Houtz and Hector Martinez for all of their hard work on these new laws.
